Does my Pledge Make a Difference?

It sure does! If a person pledges to all of the categories and practices in each area they can help save over 3,500 kWh of energy consumption every year!  That’s close to $1,000! You’ll also be saving over 10,600 gallons of water and reducing your personal carbon footprint by 14,200 lbs of Greenhouse Gas emissions! Wow, your pledge does make a difference!

How much does each Sustainable Practice Save?

ENERGY

Turn off the lights when you leave a room.

If a student in the resident halls turns off his/her lights when leaving the room, they can save annually over 105kWh and prevent as much as 114 lbs of Greenhouse Gas emissions.

Plug appliances, chargers, etc. into power strips and turn off when not in use.

By plugging in at least three phantom load appliances into powerstrips and then turning them off when not in use can help save over 390 kWh or $55 a yea!

Use energy efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL).

When you replace just one 75w incandescent with a 20w Compact Fluorescent Light bulb, you help prevent 70lbs of Greenhouse Gas emissions every year! (EPA)

Set sleep mode on my computer and monitor.

Did you know that by just setting your computer and monitor to standby mode you can save over 80kWh a year? (EPA)

Wash clothes in cold or warm water.

If you wash two loads of laundry a week in cold or warm water you can reduce your carbon footprint by 100lbs of CO2 emissions. (EPA)

Use a clothes line or drying rack instead of a dryer.

If you do this for at least 50% of your laundry your savings are an incredible 300 kWh of energy! (EPA)

Adjust my AC/Heater thermostat up 7 degrees in summer & down 8 degrees in winter.

Plan on preventing almost 1,000 lbs of Greenhouse Gas emissions if you do just these two steps! (EPA)

Walk, bike, carpool, take the bus / Bronco Express, and/or Metrolink / Bronco Link.

How would you like to save over $166 a year? This is how much you can save by reducing your driving by just 20 miles a week! (EPA)

Take the stairs.

Sustainability is about saving energy, reducing one’s carbon footprint, and promoting overall well being and good health.  Every minute you take the stairs you are burning around 10 calories! (Harvard University)

FOOD

Purchase local and seasonal produce. (ex. Cal Poly's Farm Store)

Produce in the U.S. travels, on average, 1300 - 2000 miles from farm to consumer. Purchasing produce from local sources helps reduce your carbon footprint. (ATTRA)

Eat more organic food.

When you eat organic food most of the time, you can help prevent 1.8 tons of CO2. (The Nature Conservacy)

Eat less meat.

Someone who eats meat at most meals produces around 1.8 tons of CO2; however, someone who rarely eats meat prevents over 2.6 tons of CO2! (The Nature Conservacy)

WATER

Take shorter showers.

A small 1-2 minute reduction in your shower time can save annually up over 8,400 gallons of water and reduce your water heating bill up to $235! (Upper San Gabriel Valley Municipal Water District; North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service)

Turn off the water while brushing your teeth.

By preventing 2 minutes of wasted water every day, you can save 2,000 gallons of water! (Harvard University)

Drink tap water instead of bottled water.

If you drink at least one 16oz bottle of water a day, you may want to consider switching to using a reusable water bottle.  You will keep over $360 in your pocket, as well as reduce you plastic waste! (New American Dream)

WASTE

Use reusable utensils, cups, and dishes.

This cuts down on your personal waste dramatically.  It also saves energy and reduces your carbon footprint, as the energy that it would take to produce new products is saved!

Recycle everything you can.

By recycling all of your aluminum & steel cans, plastics, glass, newspapers, and magazines, you can reduce your carbon footprint by 570 lbs of Greenhouse Gas emissions.  (EPA)

Purchase recycled paper.

The recycled paper you purchase will help reduce new trees from being cut down as well as encouraging others to recycle!

Print on both sides of paper and when making copies

The obvious savings here is seeing your paper consumption being cut in half! You are also saving the trees!
