Buck the Juice Sustainability Pledge

Cal Poly Pomona students, faculty, and staff are going green, but just how are they doing it?  During the end of September the Green Campus Program launched its first sustainability pledge called “Buck the Juice.” This pledge allows the Cal Poly Pomona community to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability and the reduction of their environmental impact.  Besides helping the environment, current CPP students who take the pledge are also entered into a raffle for the chance to win “Buck the Juice” t-shirts, cool light dimmers, or even gift cards to Trader Joe’s.

Many people have often heard of the very popular phrase “going green,” but they usually do not know what it really means or how to start.  The “Buck the Juice” pledge is designed to answer all of these questions.  Simple guidelines are given in the pledge such as “turn off the lights when one leaves a room” or “take shorter showers.” These guidelines fall into several categories such as energy, waste, food and water that are easy to understand.

On the other hand some may ask, “Can just one person make a difference?”  We answer a resounding yes! If a person pledges to all of the categories and practices in each area, they can help save over 3,500 kWh of energy consumed per person for a whole year.  That’s close to $1,000. You’ll also be saving over 10,600 gallons of water and reducing your personal carbon footprint by 14,200 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions (Source: EPA). Wow, one pledge does make a difference! If you would like to learn more about the pledge please visit: www.greencampuscpp.org/pledgefaq.htm

The flame of excitement has already begun to spread on campus.  During the first few hours that the pledge was officially launched, over 90 students quickly signed up to take the online pledge. Cal Poly Pomona is saying goodbye to its wasted energy and its carbon footprint as it’s Broncos "Buck the Juice!"

Bronco Fusion- Fall 2009

On September 23rd, Green Campus Interns took part in two tabling events during Bronco Fusion Bronco Fusion is held once a year before the start of the school year to welcome new students to the Cal Poly Pomona campus. This event gives incoming students the opportunity to meet their peers and learn about campus groups and organizations.  The Green Team, the student sustainability club on campus, and the Green Campus Program were both featured at the University Park from 7:30-9:45 AM to promote sustainability and energy savings on the campus. The Green Campus table featured a display showing the difference in energy-use between a CFL and an incandescent bulb.  Interns handed out CFL bulbs and educated students on the energy savings benefits of CFLs.  Students were also informed about the importance of proper CFL disposal.   A total of 137 CFLs were distributed (Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs).

Interns also tabled from 2-4 PM, the portion of Bronco Fusion geared toward student organizations and clubs. Many students also participated in an energy trivia game where they had a chance to win a Green Campus t-shirt or a light dimmer donated by Lutron.  Green Campus promoted its new “Buck The Juice” campaign by encouraging students to sign up for the online sustainability pledge, and telling them about the upcoming housing energy competition scheduled from October 19th through November 20th. In total, 90 students signed up to take the pledge, and a significant portion of those same students expressed interest in helping at future events as volunteers. Students who pledged also signed up to join the email list serv where they will receive the monthly newsletter and updates on current projects. Students were excited to learn about the Green Campus program and our efforts to promote energy efficiency on campus. Overall, the tabling events were a success and a lot of fun!

 GreenSpace- Sustainable Office Assessments

GreenSpace consists of office best practice assessments to help departments and colleges on campus to become more sustainable.  Green Campus conducted its first pilot of the Green Space Sustainability Office Assessment on May 14th at the Facilities and Management Building within the Energy Service Unit. Interns measured the plug load of each electronic device in the office, documented potential phantom load devices, took light readings on the light quality in each of the workspaces, interviewed employees to assess their habits, and measured the temperature and humidity of the space. The recommendations from this first Green Space Assessment have a projected savings of 3,114 kWh and $436 a year, as well as prevent 4,930lbs of Green House Gas emissions (GHG).
Parking Structure Lighting Audit

If you’ve passed by campus after midnight, you may have noticed that the Parking Structure is no longer a glowing energy hog during all hours of the night. Since December 15, 2008, the main lighting circuits of the parking structure have been programmed to turn off from 12am-6am every day saving thousands of kilowatt hours of energy for the university (see below for details)!

How did this come about? It all began in the spring of 2008, when a group of student-interns from the Green Campus Program noticed that the newly built Parking Structure’s lights remained on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They approached Energy Services Manager, George Lwin of the Facilities Planning and Management department with their concerns, and created a plan to conduct a lighting audit of the structure. Green Campus interns then presented their plan to Parking and Transportation Services who supported the idea, and gave interns approval to conduct a lighting audit of the structure during spring break. Using baseline light level readings and experimental test results, the team came up with two major options to reduce energy consumption in the structure on a large scale.

These results were presented in September 2008 to Parking and Transportation Services Director Glenn Shenker by Green Campus Program Coordinators, Brandon Ro and Razilee Tadeo. In this report Green Campus proposed two potential options of how to save energy within the structure. Option 1 consisted of using varied lighting levels on the different floors of the parking structure during the daytime, and option 2 involved utilizing a de-lamping strategy. Green Campus also presented and discussed alternative strategies that included part-time shut downs during nights, weekends, holidays, and breaks.

As a result of this meeting, Parking and Transportation Services has implemented nightly power downs of all auxiliary lighting within the Parking Structure. This action projects a potential yearly energy savings of 154,000 kWh and $22,000. These savings help prevent as much as 74.5 tons of greenhouse gas emissions.

CFL Exchange for Dorm/Suite Residents

Green Campus is often known for providing Compact Fluorescent Lamps (CFL) during their tabling events.  Individuals can either come and exchange an old incandescent light bulb for a new CFL or simply pick up a new CFL.  To receive a free bulb, individuals must sign a pledge sheet stating that they promise to use the CFL given to replace an incandescent bulb.  Visit our Upcoming Events page to see when our next exchange will be or visit the Take Action section to learn more about CFLs.

Housing Light-Switch Stickers-2009

Green Campus and the Housing Green Committee have designed a catchy sticker to place above the light switches in the dorm rooms to remind students to turn off lights and other electronic devices when leaving thier room.

Take the Stairs Day 2009

Green Campus held its annual "Take the Stairs Day" on Wednesday, March 4th at the University Library! Students, faculty and staff were encouraged to take the stairs this day to promote a healthier lifestyle, help save energy, and reduce Cal Poly Pomona's carbon footprint. Over 40 students signed the pledge to take the stairs more often and for a chance to win a gift card. Congratulations to our gift card winners John Kessler and Jannet Ruiz!

Bronco Fusion- Fall 2008

On September 25, 2008, the Green Campus participated in Bronco Fusion for the very first time.  Working with George Lwin from Department of Facilities Planning & Management - Energy Services, Razilee Tadeo, Elaine Dulay, and Ryan Tade discovered that sustainability has been on the minds of many students on this campus.  The students were asked trivia questions about going Green and participated in giveaways from Southern California Edison and the Gas Company.  Many networking opportunities arose as well, including students from the Green Team, the Involvement fair, and other on campus programs that wanted to work alongside the interns in upcoming events.  There was much positive feedback in response to a survey asking “would you be interested if Cal Poly offered a class about sustainability?” By the end of the day, the interns had handed out 120 Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs to the students who had committed to replacing their incandescent bulbs with the energy efficient alternative.
