TOP TEN ways to REDUCE ENERGY usage

  1. Turn off lights, appliances and computers when not in use. Even for a few minutes!
  2. Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFL).
  3. Plug electronics into power strips and turn them off when not in use to avoid phantom loads.
  4. Turn down your thermostat and put on a sweater in the winter; turn up the thermostat and turn on a fan in the summer!
  5. Turn your computer Monitor to save mode, screen savers don't save energy! Enable Power Management: In Windows XP; In Mac OS X, You go to 'System Preferences', click on the 'Energy Saver' icon, and set the computer and display (monitor), and Hard Drive to go to sleep. Alternatively, you can use a third-party program, or Press Cmd-Shift-Eject and your OS X Mac will immediately enter sleep mode.
  6. Buy Energy Star® labeled appliances.
  7. When doing laundry, wash full loads and use cold or warm rinses
  8. Take shorter or cooler showers.
  9. Waiting until after 7pm (after peak) to use appliances, such as, washers, dryers, and electric heaters, can help reduce to use of the dirtiest power plants.
  10. Share a fridge with room/suite mates and keep it full.

If I don't pay the BILLS...WHY should I care?

Even if you are not paying for the energy you use at school or work, it is still important to avoid energy waste. There are many reasons to conserve energy. We use energy everyday at home, at school, at work, and even when you’re playing. By saving energy you’re helping to reduce the amount of money spent on electricity, gasoline, and other forms of energy and translate to SAVING MONEY for your school, work, and home.  Saving energy is also helping to PROTECT our high standard of living which is due in part to our abundant energy sources.  Another important reason is that you are helping to SAVE the WORLD’S NATURAL ENERGY RESOURCES like natural gas, coal, oil, and water. Best of all, by using energy wisely we can REDUCE the negative "side effects" of energy usage such as POLLUTION, damage to animal habitat, and destroyed landscapes.

This makes a better environment for everyone!

Imagine if...

...there was NOT ENOUGH ENERGY!

Think about what would happen if there wasn’t enough energy

. . . there would be no light to turn on when it got dark

. . . there would not be any hot water for the shower

. . . no air conditioning in the scorching hot summer

. . . there would not be heat for your house in the winter

. . . no gas or oil to drive the car

. . . so there are lots of reasons we should save energy.

It is extremely important to practice energy conservation 24 hours a day!
